When the conversations first began, folks were overwhelmed and confused – to include energy conservation in our houses looked difficult and pricey. As time has passed, costs have decreased and a large amount of what a family can do are very inexpensive – and many times free.

Following are 10 steps that anyone can do to conserve energy and money :

One. Unplug anything in your home that you are not using or have finished using for the day – examples – lamps in new rooms, hair dryer after using for the day.

2. Install or learn how to employ a programmable thermostat for cooling and heating.

Three. Turn off lights each time you leave a room.

4. Contact your power company to set up a free evaluation of your energy usage and how to use energy more successfully. Utility companies are set up to render this service at no cost.

5. Change out standard light bulbs for energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs with a longer life. These light bulbs have become more cost efficient – watch for sales or rebates from your power firm. If everybody in the US replaced all of their standard bulb for compact fluorescent bulbs this would be the equivalent of taking one million vehicles off the road.

Six. Determine if your supply company has different rates for using your utilities at different times ; e.g, on-peak and off-peak hours.

Seven. As you begin to replace appliances, look for energy star products.

Eight. Recycle all that you can think about – cans, plastic bottles, wrapping paper, papers, magazines, card boxes, and so on. If your community doesn’t do recycling program, contact them to determine if one can be started – if not, figure out a way to recycle anyway.

9. Run dishwashers when they are full of dishes vs half full.

Ten. Instead of buying and using water in plastic bottles, buy and employ a re-usable BPA-free bottle.

11. Turn off your computers at night vs putting them to sleep.

12. If your tires are inflated at all points, you may economize on fuel and go further per mile.

13. Use fabric napkins during your meals vs paper tissues.

And the list could go on. It doesn’t take plenty of additional work or money but it just takes looking around in your life to see where you can begin to be conservative. Everything you do will make a difference. If everyone started to do any of the above suggestions, we are going to make a result on the life and quality of our planet.
